Originally settled by the Dutch, Bergen County was created in 1683 as one of the four original New Jersey counties. In the late 1800s, the county was divided into 15 sprawling townships and then into numerous municipalities and boroughs. Mahwah was an early Indian name given to a field in the vicinity, meaning “smiling fields” or “a meeting place.” Several early transportation routes soon intersected in the area and by 1909 Mahwah boasted a station on the Erie Railroad. Early industry included nickel works and the production of railway brake shoes and manhole covers. Mahwah Township was established in 1944.

Mahwah today is a sprawling, diverse community with a hometown feel. Although its location provides an easy commute for the many Mahwah residents who work in New York City, the township also provides numerous job opportunities at home. Many large corporations, such as Datascope, Sharp Electronics, Dial American, Jaguar, Konica, Seiko and UPS, have a corporate presence in Mahwah. The Township also works with local schools to provide an active and successful sports program and to support a high-quality educational system. The Mahwah Township Public School system serves more than 3,300 students who consistently score above the state average on academic tests. U.S. News & World Report recently ranked Ramapo State College as the second best comprehensive college in the north.

The beauty of Mahwah’s natural surroundings encourages residents to pursue a wide range of recreational activities. Bergen County boasts an excellent park system and residents can ski, snowboard, skate, cycle, play golf, picnic, camp, tour a zoo, visit a Revolutionary War battle site, take a guided nature hike, swim, and play softball and tennis. Bergen County Park lands include the 1,374-acre Campgaw Mountain Reservation, Campgaw Mountain Ski Center and Snowboard Area, Darlington County Park and the Ramapo Valley Reservation. Other popular area attractions include the Old Station Museum (housed in Mahwah's first railroad station), the Ramapo Wind Symphony, Small Town & Fancy Players and the Bergen County Darlington Golf Course.
