Mahwah Real Estate > Mahwah Community Info Originally settled by the Dutch, Bergen County was created in 1683 as one of the four original New Jersey counties. In the late 1800s, the county was divided into 15 sprawling townships and then into numerous municipalities and boroughs. Mahwah was an early Indian name given to a field in the vicinity, meaning “smiling fields” or “a meeting place.” Several early transportation routes soon intersected in the area and by 1909 Mahwah boasted a station on the Erie Railroad. Early industry included nickel works and the production of railway brake shoes and manhole covers. Mahwah Township was established in 1944.
